Ambipolar-diffusion Timescale, Star-formation Timescale, and the Ages of Molecular Clouds: Is There a Discrepancy ?
نویسنده
چکیده
We re-examine critically the estimates of the duration of different phases of star formation and the lifetimes of molecular clouds, based on the ages of T-Tauri stars, age spreads of stars in clusters, and statistics of pre-stellar cores. We show that all available observational data are consistent with lifetimes of molecular clouds comparable to ≈ 10 yr, as well as with the predictions of the theory of self-initiated, ambipolar-diffusion–controlled star formation. We conclude that there exists no observational support for either “young” molecular clouds or “rapid” star formation. Observational Constraints on the Ages of Molecular Clouds and the Star-formation Timescale: Ambipolar-diffusion–controlled or Turbulence-induced Star Formation?
We revisit the problem of the star formation timescale and the ages of molecular clouds. The apparent overabundance of star-forming molecular clouds over clouds without active star formation has been thought to indicate that molecular clouds are “short-lived” and that star formation is “rapid”. We show that this statistical argument lacks self-consistency and, even within the rapid star-formati...
متن کاملPost-t Tauri Stars: a False Problem
We consider the problem of the apparent lack of old T Tauri stars in low-mass star forming regions in the framework of the standard model of low-mass star formation. We argue that the similarity between molecular cloud lifetime and ambipolar diffusion timescale implies that star formation does not take place instantaneously, nor at a constant rate. We conclude that the probability of finding a ...
متن کاملStar Formation in Cold, Spherical, Magnetized Molecular Clouds
We present an idealized, spherical model of the evolution of a magnetized molecular cloud due to ambipolar diffusion. This model allows us to follow the quasi-static evolution of the cloud’s core prior to collapse and the subsequent evolution of the remaining envelope. By neglecting the thermal pressure gradients in comparison with magnetic stresses and by assuming that the ion velocity is smal...
متن کاملMagnetically Regulated Star Formation in Turbulent Clouds
We investigate numerically the combined effects of supersonic turbulence, strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion on cloud evolution leading to star formation. We find that, in clouds that are initially magnetically subcritical, supersonic turbulence can speed up star formation, through enhanced ambipolar diffusion in shocks. The speedup overcomes a major objection to the standard scenar...
متن کاملThe Inability of Ambipolar Diffusion to set a Characteristic Mass Scale in Molecular Clouds
We investigate the question of whether ambipolar diffusion (ion-neutral drift) determines the smallest length and mass scale on which structure forms in a turbulent molecular cloud. We simulate magnetized turbulence in a mostly neutral, uniformly driven, turbulent medium, using a three-dimensional, two-fluid, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code modified from Zeus-MP. We find that substantial struct...
